Why does a poker solver mix bets and checks?

A mixed strategy assigns more than one action to a hand in a particular game. Before memorizing the percentages, identify whether you are viewing a whole range, a hand class or one exact combination.

Read the level of aggregation

A range summary can mix checks and bets because different hands take different actions. That does not prove that every individual hand mixes. Select a class, then inspect the available exact combinations and their frequencies.

In the captured Viper example below, the source notes identify a river study on Ks7s2d5c9s with ATs selected. Treat the picture as a recorded interface example, not a strategy for every river or a live quote of the current engine’s result.

Understand what a mix means

At an exact equilibrium, actions used with positive probability by the same hand at the same decision have equal expected value against the equilibrium continuation. Their frequencies can still be different. A higher frequency is not a separate measure of how profitable that action is.

Practical solvers stop at finite accuracy and interfaces round numbers. Small EV differences in a displayed mix can therefore require an accuracy check instead of an immediate conclusion that the solver is inconsistent. The linked background article discusses this distinction.

Make one controlled comparison

Use a small supported spot. Record the exact combo, node, board, ranges, stack, bet sizes and accuracy. Compare the EVs at that same node before drawing conclusions from the overall range chart.

Then change one assumption, such as an available bet size, and solve again. If the mix changes, first ask whether you are now studying a different game. Do not combine a frequency from one solve with an EV from another.

Turn the observation into practice

Write the structural lesson: which hands tended to check, which tended to bet, and what input could change that tendency? Return to the same configuration and practice a few decisions without looking at the answer first.

A simplification is a separate strategy choice. Do not assume that always choosing the more frequent action preserves the original solution’s properties. Keep the original result as a reference and state clearly when you are practicing an approximation.
