What GTO actually means, starting from the saddle point

GTO — game theory optimal — is a Nash equilibrium strategy. Mathematically it is a saddle point: you cannot raise your EV by changing your strategy alone, and neither can your opponent. Cold, precise, and impossible to exploit.
GTO is not the most profitable strategy
Against someone who takes 72o to the river, GTO is not how you make the most money — exploiting them is. What GTO gives you is a baseline to deviate from. If you do not know where equilibrium sits, you cannot see which way your opponent has drifted, or which way you should drift to punish it.
Why you need a solver
A single river spot already spans 1,326 hand combinations across several bet sizes. Nobody memorises that. What you can train is an intuition for range versus range — which is exactly what Viper’s training mode is built for: not memorising charts, but calibrating that intuition against real EV loss.
